Longroom Restaurant – Ponsonby, Auckland

My partner and I decided one night in June to go to a nice restaurant in town, and we chose Longroom in Ponsonby. (This is one of the many restaurants in the Entertainment Book 2013 that offers a complimentary meal when another one of equal or greater value is purchased.)

I called for reservations the same night we wanted to come, and the guy on the phone gladly took my details. When we were running late, I called again to ask if the scheduled reservation can be moved, and he said no because the kitchen will close at 8pm. It’s a bit weird he didn’t mention this in my first call, and also that their official website specifically said it opens from Tuesday till Sunday 11am – late. Eight pm is not yet that late though.

But anyway, we went in and ordered our drinks first at the bar before we went to our small table for two with “Reserve” label on it.

A very amiable waiter dressed in clean white shirt with apron and black pants approached us, mentioned what’s good on the menu, and took our orders.

I had 250 grams of rib eye steak, grilled medium rare with fries and garden salad (NZ$32). I initally chose the Cafe de Paris sauce for the steak, which I later on found was actually a type of herb butter.

My partner had slow cooked spiced BBQ chicken breast with piquant corn salsa (NZ$29), which was also gluten free.

The meals were absolutely delicious! However, when I realized that having herb butter with the steak wasn’t really a good idea, my honey asked the if we could have the peppercorn jus. When he handed it on the table, he then said it;s on the house. Wow, I love that kind of service!

Good thing my honey’s meal was free, so we tried to have dessert to share, which is vanilla bean crème brulee with a piece of shortbread. Yum!

While we were enjoying our dinner, we couldn’t help but notice the manager, who was dressed in black shirt and black pants, bossing the chef and the other people around the kitchen. We figured he may be the one who told the guy who answered my call that they will close at 8pm. That’s not nice to treat the employees! He wasn’t pleasantly smiling at all when he presented the dessert to us on the table.

Overall, it was a good dinner, mixed with a wonderful atmosphere. I would love to go back there.
